We are on the final stretch before the summer at mobfish right now! The most important features are set to be rolled out before the first employees leave for their summer holidays.

For this reason, we finished the next V0.22.0 update within two weeks.

This article is intended to give you a brief overview of the most important new functions as well as give you a sneak peek behind the scenes.

Audio transcoding and improved video transcoding behavior

A very important requirement for us is to make complex topics as simple as possible for the user.

In our opinion, good technology should be as invisible to the user as possible.

Anyone who designs content for VR glasses will be confronted with different video, image and sound formats. Not every platform can cope with all media types.

Users of the mobfish VR STUDIO should not have to deal with all this. This is why our servers convert all media into suitable formats in the background. Depending on the platform, the apps will then select the format that best suits your needs.

We call this process cloud transcoding.

As part of the update, we have once again revised the algorithms behind the selection process and the settings for the individual video and audio settings.
The result surprised us!

Depending on the test case, we were able to achieve up to 40% more pixels with the same load on the VR glasses.

With today’s update, we are already rolling out part of our optimization process – more optimizations will follow in the upcoming updates. In doing so, we want to ensure that our customers find the best possible stage for their content.

Experimental speech recognition in VR (offline)

360° videos are perfectly interactive stories to tell. We have always tried to optimize the VR experience so that the viewer experiences as few interruptions as possible during a VR session. This is why the control element in our VR design is discreetly hidden.

Another natural control element has been added to this version: speech.

With version 0.22, there is experimental support for offline speech recognition for the first time.

That means:

The user can only make decisions and move through the VR experience using their voice. The absence of cumbersome operating elements such as the controller increases the level of immersion.

You need a pro account to test the new feature. Those wanting to do so should contact their account manager.

AAB support in the app building process

This feature mainly affects Android and Daydream devices. Google’s Play Store requires all apps to use native code from 1st August 2019 and to be available in both a 32-bit and 64-bit version.

We have integrated this support feature so that our customers don’t lose their positions in Google’s app store as a result of this change in the Play Store policy. This shows the advantage of using a supported solution such as mobfish VR STUDIO over independent agency developments. Adjustments such as these are included in the set monthly price, meaning that our customers do not have to make any modifications.

Support for Oculus Quest

With the Oculus Quest that was launched last month, Facebook has introduced a self-sufficient 6dof VR solution that can be used in a variety of ways.

Even though the Oculus Go is more suitable for purely 360° applications in terms of price/performance, we were keen to support the new platform right from the start.

We recommend the Oculus Quest especially to customers who want to use Virtual Reality in an even more versatile way. It also great for those wanting to use 6dof tracking on the move.

More from our lab

Besides the main features, we have also fixed more than 50 other bugs and made some minor changes.

We are currently working on a feature vote system so that we can consider customer opinions in an even better way in the future.
